FISH-ON CUT BAIT
Since 2006 Great Lakes fishermen have not had good cut bait to fish with because of the regulations put in place by our governments.
In 2007 the Fish-On bait company tried to fill this void but the cuts were poor and using herring oil in the packing process prevented the bait from freezing properly. With the processing being done in Nova Scotia it was impossible for the company to oversee the process.
2009 brings new cut bait herring strips from the Fish-On Bait Company.
Fish-On Bait Company realizes how important cut bait is to the Great Lakes Fisherman so they went back to the drawing board. They moved all operations to their plant in Florida so they could make sure the processing of cut bait is done properly.
They also have come up with a new way to package the strips. Instead of using water they are now packing them in salt. This means the bait does not need to be frozen just refrigerated.
They have 3 different cuts -
- Grade A is a thicker cut and is 5" in length
- Grade B is a thicker cut and is 4" in length
- N&D cut is a thinner cut (fits in large teasers) and is 5" in length
I am really excited to be a part of the cut bait return. There may be bumps in the road, but with Fish-On's determination to make the strips the best they can be, the bumps will be smoothed out if any should develop.

The bait pictured fits in the Rhys Davis Large Teaser. All Fish-On baits are salted on the ship when they are caught. As you can see in the picture above these have been salted again after being cut into strips.
